Project Analysis

Dataset on historical sales of video games from 1983-2016 obtained from VGZChartz.

Some of the key questions to address:

  • Are certain types of games more popular than others?
  • What other publishers will likely be the main competitors in certain markets?
  • Have any games decreased or increased in popularity over time?
  • How have their sales figures varied between geographic regions over time?

Overview of Video Games Sales Trend

  • GameCo to focus more on EU's growing market. EU has shown to be steadily increasing over the years, overtaking JP in 1997 and taking over NA in 2015.
  • It is suggested to further study the reason for mirroring of sales between JP and NA as this could give insights into certain dynamics between the NA & JP market.

Popular Genres and Top Publishers

  • Action, Sports and Shooter have consistently been the top 3 genres for EU, NA and Other regions throughout the years.
  • If GameCo wants to focus its marketing on the EU, attention should be given to these genres

Opportunities:

The graph above shows that despite the popularity in Shooters genre, the number of titles released is far less than Action or Sports

Competitors:

  • Electronic Arts publishes games in the top 3 popular genres, with the most games sold in Sports genre.
  • Activision sold the most Shooter games and Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment leads the Action genre

Challenges in this Analysis

1. How do you provide actionable input for marketing strategies?

 Solution: Provide regional breakdown on game genre and competitors (biggest publishers) so that strategies can be tailored to each region.

2. Data ranges from 1983-2016. If the top publishers were determined using this time period, would they still be relevant?

 Solution: Analyze using various time periods to see the shift in the biggest publishers.

  • Through out the years there has been a shift in the biggest publishers (i.e. publishers with the most sales) in EU.
  • Nintendo’s share is decreasing over the years whereas Electronic Arts gains over the years. Also worth noting Ubisoft and Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment remain influential here.

Recommendation

  • To focus more on EU's growing market. Marketing should be focused on Shooter, Sports and Action games with competitors like Activision, Electronic Arts and Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment to keep in mind.
  • To explore potential in Other Region to capitalize on the possible growth.
  • To consider developing Shooter type games to serve the demands of NA and EU.
  • To further study the reason for the mirroring of sales between JP and NA in order to understand the dynamics between the NA & JP market.
